The 6 Best Lakes Near Phoenix to Rent a Boat

August 18, 2026 · 6 min read

You don't have to drive far for a great day on the water. Here are the six best lakes within reach of Phoenix — and what each one is best for.

One of the best things about living in the Valley is how close the water is. Within about an hour of Phoenix you've got big open reservoirs, dramatic canyon lakes, and quiet coves — and you don't need to own a boat to enjoy any of them. Here are the six best lakes near Phoenix to rent a boat, and what each one does best.

1. Lake Pleasant — the closest big water

About 45 minutes from downtown, Lake Pleasant is the go-to for a spur-of-the-moment lake day. It's huge, it's scenic, and it's ideal for pontoons and cruising. If you're coming from the west Valley, you're especially close — see boat rentals in Peoria and Glendale.

2. Saguaro Lake — cliffs and calm water

Saguaro Lake sits in the Tonto National Forest with towering desert cliffs and famously calm water — great for first-timers, families, and watersports. It's the closest lake for the East Valley, an easy trip from Mesa, Tempe, and Gilbert.

3. Canyon Lake — the prettiest drive

Tucked along the Apache Trail, Canyon Lake has some of the most dramatic scenery in the state. It's a favorite out of Apache Junction and a stunning spot for a sunset cruise.

4. Bartlett Lake — wide-open and laid back

Bartlett Lake is a local favorite with roomy coves perfect for tubing, swimming, and anchoring up for the afternoon. It's the closest water to Cave Creek.

5. Lake Havasu — the road-trip payoff

It's about three hours west, but Lake Havasu is worth the drive — warm water, endless shoreline, and the legendary sandbar scene. Best for party boats and a full weekend. (We wrote a whole Lake Havasu sandbar guide if you're headed out.)

6. Roosevelt Lake — room to roam

Roosevelt Lake is Arizona's largest, with wide-open water and some of the best fishing around. If you want space and quiet, this is your lake.
